The 200kV Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) is capable of handling frozen biological specimens.  It has high tilt polepieces and a goniometer to enable tomography and 3D reconstruction as well as a set of high resolution polepieces with double- tilt sample holder to enable investigations in material sciences.  The instrument also has a high pressure freezer for the vitrification of biological tissue. Furthermore, this instrument has a freeze substitution unit to dehydrate and embed biological samples at -80 degrees celcius for investigations using immunogold cytochemistry techniques. Associated with the TEM is a cryo-ultramicrotome to make sections of biological tissue or other samples like polymers at - 100 degrees celcius or lower.
