An ionosonde is a type of high frequency radar which is used to measure the bottomside (90 to 350 km) ionosphere. On the 3 July 2008 the first ionogram from the Hermanus ionosonde was recorded. The sounder was a new model Digisonde, a DPS-4D, purchased from the University of Massachusetts Lowell Center for Atmospheric Research (UMLCAR) in the USA and the Hermanus station was the first in the world to have the new model DPS-4D operational in the field.
