The Lightcycler 1.5 instrument uses air for heating and cooling instead of thermal blocks to achieve high-speed thermal cycling. Ambient air is drawn into the machine by a fan and heated up by a heating coil located within the lid of the instrument. The main instrument unit contains the thermal chamber, photometer and drive units.
