The R&D remote synthesiser, also known as an automatic synthesis unit, which includes a multi-purpose HPLC is used for the development of new radio-labelled compounds (containing a radioactive tags) for PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging. This combination will make it possible to synthesise compounds (with high levels of radiation doses) behind lead shielding. These compounds are used for PET studies in animals and humans. PET studies are carried out to accurately follow the bio-distribution of compounds in real time using state of the art PET scanners. Because of the sensitivity of these instruments and the high signal to mass ratio of the radio-nuclides, only small amounts of these compounds are needed for pre-clinical and clinical evaluation.
