SANAE SuperDARN Radar CUTLASS Standard

SuperDARN (The Super Dual Auroral Radar Network) is a network of coherent scatter HF radars which measures backscatter from Æeld- aligned decametre-scale ionospheric irregularities. The transmitted HF radar signals are refracted towards the horizontal as they enter ionospheric regions with higher electron densities. If these regions contain ionospheric irregularities, the radar signals will be backscattered when they are propagating perpendicular to the magnetic Æeld. The SuperDARN radars are therefore a very good diagnostic tool for studies of magnetosphere- ionosphere coupling.
