Pegasus HRT Pegasus HRT – High Resolution GC-TOFMS

The Pegasus HRT is a gas chromatograph and high-resolution mass spectrometer. High Resolution Mass Spectrometry allows for the accurate determination of the empirical formula of unknown analytes. The higher the mass resolution and the greater the mass accuracy (measured in ppm, where 0 is the ultimate goal), the more likely that the empirical formula calculation is correct and the fewer the potential matches. Under normal circumstances, the system operates in high resolution (> 25,000). When required, the system can operate at a much higher resolution of 50,000, resulting in a mass accuracy of below 1 ppm. As most samples of interest are fairly complex and not pure extracts, the system operates at 200 spectra/second to allow for the determination of most co-elutions even when running complex samples under ultra-fast chromatographic conditions. The proposed unit can support a direct insertion probe, which would provide us with additional research capability by allowing for thermally labile analytes and is crucial for synthetic organic chemistry. The proposed configuration also allows for PCI to enable pseudo-molecular ions for simpler structural elucidation. This source could potentially be coupled to the direct insertion probe. Finally, sensitivity is crucial and the Pegasus HRT offers unrivalled sensitivity for this type of instrument, easily reaching 1 ppb HCB in real samples while operating at full mass accuracy and speed. The proposed configuration incorporates a Thermal Desorption Unit, which will allow us to expand on our current capacity and allow for air samples to be run, which can be useful for chemical signal elucidation and allows allows for thermal extraction. Finally, we will have the normal suite of sample introduction techniques, Headspace, Liquid, SPME, Large Volume, Direct Injection
